Curley, who died in 2006 at age 87, was selected by the Rensselaer County Honor-A-Deceased Veteran Committee to be commemorated for his service. He received the Bronze Star. A city native educated in the city schools, Curley enlisted in the Army on Aug. 29, 1940.

Outgoing Chairman Neil Kelleher will return to the Rensselaer County Legislature as a paid assistant when his term ends on Dec. 31. Kelleher, a two-decade legislator who did not win re-election in November, will begin a $15,000-a-year part-time job as special assistant to the chairman on Jan. 1. Legislator Martin Reid, R-District 4, is assuming the role of chairman in the new term and offered Kelleher the position.

District Five County Legislator Stan Brownell of Hoosick Falls was selected Vice Chairman of the Legislature at the Majority's Organizational meeting last week. Not since Henry Zwack of Stephentown left the post of County Executive in 2001 has a District Five public official held a leadership post in County Government. District Five includes the towns of Stephentown, Berlin, Grafton, Petersburgh, Hoosick and the Village of Hoosick Falls.

The discontent of the voters, evident at all governmental levels in the recent election, was powerfully expressed in the election results for the Rensselaer County Legislature. When the Legislature met on Tuesday, November 6, one week after the election, the landscape of the Legislature had been changed considerably. The balance of power between the parties has not changed, there will still be 13 Republicans and 6 Democrats, but ten of the 19 Legislators will be new in January.

The Rensselaer County Legislature on Election Day lost one of its most vocal and controversial leaders -- Bob Mirch. It came as a big surprise. Longtime Rensselaer County lawmakers Mirch and Neil Kelleher did not win re-election.
